What are Benefits of a Pap Smear?

Pap smears are recommended for most women starting at age 21 and continuing at regular intervals as advised by a healthcare provider. The frequency of testing depends on your age, medical history, and previous results. Women who have risk factors, such as a history of abnormal results or a weakened immune system, may need more frequent testing.

  • Early detection of cervical cancer before symptoms appear
  • Identification of abnormal cervical cells that could develop into cancer
  • Monitoring of overall cervical health over time
  • Peace of mind knowing you are taking proactive steps for your wellness

What to Expect During Your Pap Smear?

The procedure is quick, typically lasting only a few minutes. During your visit:

  • You will lie comfortably on an exam table, similar to a routine pelvic exam.
  • A small, gentle instrument (speculum) is used to allow access to the cervix.
  • A soft brush or swab collects a small sample of cervical cells.
  • The sample is sent to a lab for analysis.

While some women may feel slight pressure or mild discomfort, the test is usually not painful and requires no recovery time.

Life After a Pap Smear

Most women can return to normal activities immediately after the test. Your provider will review the results with you and recommend any follow-up if needed. In most cases, results are normal, and the Pap smear simply serves as reassurance of your good health. If abnormalities are detected, additional testing or follow-up care can be arranged promptly.

The process is designed to be simple, safe, and supportive with Dr. Nadendla will review your health history and recommend treatment that may be appropriate for you.
