How do lasers safely remove hair?
Lasers eliminate unwanted hair using a wavelength that is only absorbed by pigments in the hair follicle. That means your Triangle Women’s Center provider can safely direct the laser into the hair follicle without harming your skin.
As the follicle absorbs the laser’s energy, the heat destroys it. Treated follicles can’t grow hair in the future, so your treatment is permanent.

Why do I need several laser hair removal sessions?
Even the best lasers like the Icon can only destroy a hair follicle while it’s growing hair. The problem is that follicles don’t continuously grow hair; they go through three stages that include a growth, transitional, and dormant stage. Hair follicles continuously cycle from one to the next.
When a follicle enters the dormant stage, the existing hair falls out, and the follicle doesn’t grow hair for several months. At any given time, roughly 10-15% of your hair follicles are dormant, so they’re not affected by your laser treatment.
Additionally, every hair follicle is on a different schedule, which means they don’t all conveniently go into the dormant phase at the same time. You need up to six Icon laser hair removal treatments spaced several weeks apart, depending on the type of hair being removed.
What should I expect during and after laser hair removal?
The length of each laser hair removal session depends on the size of the area treated. Your upper lip may only take a few minutes, while your entire back or legs could take a half-hour or longer.
Most hair removal patients at Triangle Women’s Center tolerate the laser treatment, often describing it as feeling like the snap of a rubber band. However, your Triangle Women’s Center provider talks with you about what to expect and asks if you’d like a topical anesthetic.
When you finish your treatment, you can get back to your normal activities. Your skin may be slightly red or swollen, but it returns to normal shortly after your visit.
